Yahoo! Messenger! Worm alert!

Yahoo! Messenger gets a new worm companion. It could sound sweet but it’s not. FaceTime, the worm-buster company which spotted it, tagged it as yhoo32.explr and described it like this:

“This is one of oddest and more insidious pieces of malware we have encountered in years. This is the first instance of a complete web browser hijack without the user’s awareness.” Similar ‘rogue’ browsers, such as ‘Yapbrowser’, have demonstrated the potential for serious damage by directing end-users to potentially illegal or illicit material. ‘Rogue’ browsers seem to be the hot new thing among hackers.”

Once on a PC via the IM client, the program automatically hacks the computer’s existing browser home page and encourages users to visit a fraudulent Web site that attempts to load spyware programs onto their devices.

In addition, the virus also plays looped guitar music whenever someone starts up a PC it has infected, or opens the fraudulent safety browser itself.

If Yahoo is experiencing worm attacks as much as MSN Messenger, the old one, not the new one Live Messenger, this means Yahoo messenger is gaining popularity. It’s always like that, worm are attracted to the most gorgeous apples.
