Marketing research agency Harris Interactive questioned both British and American customers on VoIP technology. The results? They’re getting word. The British are now 46% to know what’s happening to their phone, up to 9% in 9 months. For the same time period, the American awareness jumped by 15%, meaning that 51% of consumers have heard of VoIP.

The poll also brings some interesting conclusions:

  • 53% of British respondents and 43% of American ones like the option of making free calls between users of the same provider. Our comments: more and more people would be able to give such phone calls, as triple plays will bloom in the UK and the US.
  • Around half of the polled people don’t VoIP in both countries.
  • 28% of British and 35% of Americans respondent dislike to talk to their computer.

Note: Red Herring, which reported on this poll, didn’t detail the Harris Interactive’s methodology.

  • I think that awareness raising is a good thing - but until more people learn to “trust” it, we won’t see mega progress. That said, with the new enhancements coming out, all of the major players like Verizon coming on board … it shouldn’t be long before the trust factor starts increasing and we see major bumps in users. I knew awareness was getting big when my mom “explained” Skype to me.

  • More and more customers suscribe for triple-play services. Usually, they don’t even know how their phone connected to the broadband router work, but they use because it’s cheap or free. For this situation, trust is not the critical factor but simple economics.

When people has asked whether or not they want to install a voice client on their computer, here comes the trust. Can we rely on Skype to dial 911? Are there some people who could ‘listen’ to our discussion? What about spywares and open ports in the firewall? As people have learned that computers are not completely safe and trustable, they also tend to do the same with VoIP client.
