After some debates on its real purposes, the city of Toronto has now its WiFi citywide network running. Toronto Hydro, the public utility service company supported the work, was criticized about the ‘unfair’ competition that it’s putting on private-sector ISPs.

The debuting network will cover several parts of downtown Toronto, the whole area getting fully blanketed by December 2007, when all hotspots will equipped streetlight poles. For the first six months, access will be free. After that, it will cost $5 an hour, $10 a day or $29 per month.
