With Sonopia, each brand is a MVNO

With all the recent mobile operators launching their virtual networks (which means they don’t own the infrastructures but rent them), the idea of providing a service for anyone to start his own network is a tempting business model. After all, Blogger.com was successful at providing a blogging space for anybody, YouTube provides the tools to start one’s TV channel, and that’s what Sonopia must have thought for the telecoms.

Sonopia works with Verizon to handle calls and data transfer. Setup charges are free, each Sonopia registered users pays for the service, but in return, the “mini carrier” will receive 3-8% of revenues generated by the customers they sign up. Each carrier has its own calling plans, get a co-branded website and is able to send their members messages about the latest news or special events.

Right now, available MVNOs include the Sonopia Linux or the Juventus soccer fan club. If you’ve got a strong brand with your podcast radio, or your web TV, monetize them with this new tool.
