Seeing by sound

Once in a while, the fabulous Peter Meijer’s vOICe software breaks the news. Peter Meijer is a senior scientist at Philips Research Laboratories in the Netherlands, and for several years, is working on a “seeing by voice” system.

So far, its vOICe works by translating images from a camera on-the-fly into highly complex soundscapes, which are then transmitted to the user over headphones.

And now, via textually, the Globe&Mail indicates that the software is heading to more and more powerful cellphones:

“Still others are using a mobile phone’s built-in video camera and internal processor, thanks to the fact that the processing power in many new handsets is starting to rival that of early desktop computers.”

Some people thinks that if perfected, the software could open a highway to bionic eyes. The picture describes how the software codes a picture. Alerting blind people on what colors compose a picture has been made possible.

The software could be downloaded here.
