Ryanair: Expensive in-flight calls for a low-cost airliner

So you think that inflight calling isn’t business viable. After all, Boeing is selling its onboard WiFi service provider Connexion, Verizon Airfone steps out from this market, and the infrastructure are just simply unaffordable for struggling airliners. But Ryanair, the most successful low-cost airliner in Europe, saw it as a big opportunity ― to do the opposite.
“The company hopes that by next June it will be able to offer the service using a technology that will essentially turn each plane into a floating cell tower and turn Ryanair into its own mobile operator. Of course, the company plans to charge substantial roaming fees, to the tune of a few dollars per minute,” says Techdirt.
Telecoms authorities haven’t approved the announcement, nor given any license to Ryanair.
