NYC to test two citywide mobile wireless networks

NYC is lining up on citywide wireless programs. The City council is about to start testing two competing wireless technologies to create a Citywide Mobile Wireless Network (CMWN) for emergency responders.

Northrop Grumman Corporation and Motorola are the two companies on the deck. They will have to demonstrate that their network could boost data downloads as city maps, building plans, fire apparatus, but also provide to every officer federal/state counter-terrorism and crime databases. So far, the pilot program will blanket Lower Manhattan for a cost of $2.7 million.
