Mobile phone is “haute couture”

They can be created for a fashion show or esthetically enhanced by a haute couture guru. But cellphones seems to become the new playground of creators, not only industrial designers.

Nokia used to include young designers in its design department. Smart move. And this time, for the Amsterdam fashion week, it didn’t break the tradition. It asked three Dutch designers, Victor de Bie, Jeroen van Tuyl and Jan Taminiau to style their L’Amour new phone collection. L’Amour already grabbed a distinction from the prestigious IDEA 2006. Check the results in Bright (in Dutch).

Meanwhile, Samsung asked Versace to brand its new clamshell phone. Technically, the device doesn’t show any exceptional features: 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, MP3 player. But its design is slick and cool, on top of that, it’s a Versace. The phone will be introduced in Italy by the end of August.

It’s not really a coincidence. The mobile device market is booming, and every one wants to be duplicate the Motorola Razr success ― success granted to their collaboration with Apple for the design. Besides communication campaigns that feature David Beckham (Motorola) or Tom Cruise (Helio), mobile phone manufacturers definitively rely on trendsetters to foster consumer loyalty and to boost sells.
