Not a GPS but WiFi positioning system for iRiver W10

The new iRiver W10 media player caught our attention, as in some way, it is the “iPhone of the CES.” The device can hook an Internet access via its WiFi connectivity, has some built-in VoIP functions and come with 20 something maps of major US cities. All of this makes it a great companion for tourists or “urban explorers” as iRiver said.

Today, there were more precisions about the positioning system. The W10 doesn’t come with GPS, but instead, it will use a WiFi positioning system, built by Skyhook Wireless, and locate itself on the map by WiFi triangulation.

For what we can expect, iRiver might launch the era of WiFi tourism. Users would follow a path formed by WiFi access point, grabbed podcasts describing the city. This would be interesting to see how early buyers would use the media player.
