Fon network to explode

When it comes to broadband market, France ranks among the first European countries for DSL penetration and cheap prices. So it’s quite a huge deal that Martin Varsavsky’s Fon stroke with French major ISP Neuf Cegetel.
Although Neuf Cegetel is not the biggest fixed-line broadband network ― France Telecom still dominates the French market ―, Fon has now a VIP white card to a 1.2 million broadband residential user base.
Now, here are the two most juicy parts of the agreement. First, each of Neuf Box, the Neuf Cegetel wireless router, will be upgraded into a Fon new node of the network. That means the dimension of the Fon network will explode. Literally. More than 100 times. As a router uses to connect a household.
Second, every Neuf subscriber could now be a Fon member, sharing their bandwidth at the level they decide to. Remember, Fon provides two levels, the Linus and the Bills ones. The former implies a free bandwidth sharing, the later is for those who want to charge for their access.
Fon is making a lot of noise, as a grassroot network for the people and by the people. But, a major deal could sometimes boost its expansion.

A rather small user base compared to the other big deal the company made in France with Neuf-Cegetel, the second biggest ISP in France with over 1.2 million broadband users. […]
