Cisco’s iPhone accused of non-open source practices

By suing Apple over the iPhone trademark, Cisco is looking to get its VoIP handset compatible with the new cellphone. But Cisco might not be the best of the class when it comes to intellectual property. ComputerWorld reported about an open-source enthusiast accusing the company itself of infringing copyright in the same product.

The reason? Cisco might have not published the source code for some components of the WIP300 iPhone, a Linux-based Skype phone. The open-source licensing agreement requires anybody who decide to rely on some open source codes to “share them alike”, meaning Cisco is required to disclose them. Although this case would bum Cisco, maybe elbow its reputation a bit, that might not impact on its trial against Apple.

UPDATE — Cisco replies to the accusation by confirming it and would take “steps to resolve a single issue raised regarding this product’s compliance with the GNU General Public License, or GPL.”
