Blackberry: Attack of the clone RedBerry

When the Chinese people love a device, they wait, but too long. Too long means several weeks, a year if you’re really good at telling them to calm down, because they won’t delay the launch of their own devices.

Of course, between BlackBerry and RedBerry, only the flavor has changed. But RedBerry, launched by state-controlled China Unicom, could quickly seize the Chinese market. Still tiny compared to the whole population, but already tops 400+ million mobile phone users.

RedBerry will provide a standard 5 Mo e-mail account for less than a dollar a month, plus a few cents for each e-mail sent. Far cheaper than Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry price rates.

Meanwhile, “we are on the verge of launching BlackBerry service with China Mobile and expect to launch by the end of May,” Jim Balsillie, RIM chairman and co-chief executive officer, keeps saying last week, reported the Globe&Mail.

But he knows that RIM has to hurry. Next month, China Mobile itself is expected to launch PushMail, a very similar service expected to offer an unlimited mobile email usage for $12 per month.

But none of the Chinese clones has announced to provide Google Talk or another softphone preloaded in their devices.
