Soon, one of 10 BellSouth subscribers will be happy. The 5th US broadband Internet service provider is planning to upgrade about 10% customer households to 50 megabits per second.

Currently, the fastest speed provided by the telco reaches 6 mbps. Ten percent means around 1.35 million DSL subscriptions. What will happen to others? BellSouth plans to boost their bandwidth to 20-25 mbps.

The BellSouth technology underneath the upgrade is known as VDSL2. Previously, South-East Asian telco, ZyXEL Communications, announced using VDSL2 for its network. Its idea was to roll out video on IP quite soon.
