Air France embraces in-flight GSM

Usually, Air France hostesses have told you: na, mister, you can’t turn on your camera phone. And you said to yourself something like: Dammit, there is that beautiful girl, who could almost be Amelie Poulain, sitting right to you. But now, on one plan, Air France hostesses would peacefully smile at you when you would take out your 3G camera phone. In fact, she will also encourage you to make a phone call.
Air France introduces a new Airbus 318 with in-flight GSM connectivity. The plan will fly on early 2007. Air France will keep testing the service during six months with passengers, and eventually will extend it if the first results are all right.
The system, developed by OnAir, a joint venture between Airbus and Sita, is the answer to the Boeing in-flight broadband Internet access service. This last one features WiFi connectivity and is promoted since late March on Lufthansa intercontinental flights (see article).
